Belle lived at Kenwood House for 31 years. There's something about the family structure that encourages secrets. Lord and Lady Mansfield to some extent treated her and brought her up as a member of the Murray family. These Africans would then be transported through the infamous “middle passage” to work in America, whereupon the ships would pick up raw goods (provided by slave labor) to carry back to England to turn into manufactured goods, starting the whole process over again.
There was one man who Dido singularly failed to impress with either her disposition or her looks. I tried to get my ex-wife served with divorce papers. Dido Elizabeth Belle worked as an amanuensis for Lord Mansfield in his later years - which reflected not only her education and abilities but also the trust and regard in which she was held by her great-uncle.
